Comparison of grandparents’ answers : Similarities : The internet did not exist so they had to use other media for information or for entertainment. Differences : Some of our grandparents had a TV, others didn’t. Comparison of parents’ answers : Things started to develop during our parents’ time with many improvements concerning mass media. Bu the internet didn’t exist in our parents’ families. In most of the families of their generation, there was a radio-cassette player and a television set.
Comparison of grandparents’ answers with parents’ answers : Similarities : Both generations didn’t use the internet when they were teenagers. Differences : Our parents’ generation usually had the TV at home. In our grandparents’ time, technologies were not developed at all. There was no touch phone for example. They sometimes had a tv or a radio.
Present situation of teenagers and comparison with previous generations : Our situation is very different from the previous generations. Grandparents were not connected at all while our generation is connected all the time. Today’s teenagers use more their mobile phones, computers and tablets than their parents. Most of the teenagers have the internet, a TV and computers whereas the previous generations didn’t. Conclusion : Technologies are faster and more efficient but teenagers spend a lot of time on these media to the detriment of real communication with their relatives. Teenagers seem to be addicted to social networks and sometimes miss the essential.
Comparison with Jasubden M.L School In both countries, today's teenagers spend a lot of time on the social media compared to their parents and grandparents' generations. Here is a video of our VC :)
Reflection
What went well? The videoconference with India was great. It was very interesting to talk in real life with Indian students. In class, speaking English is a bit artificial. Here it was real communication.
What didn't go well? It was interesting to do the interviews and learn about the past generations. It was difficult to write in English because we didn’t have the vocabulary sometimes. And it was hard to respect the deadlines. Communication between us was not always easy.
What we could have done differently: We should communicate more and divide the tasks better. What we learnt about our topic: We learnt a lot about our parents and grandparents’generations concerning mass media. We realised that there are a lot of differences between the generations. Like the Indian students, we use our phones a lot to surf the net, listen to music and use social networks. And in the generation of our grandparents and parents, technologies were not very developed.
